Advancing in Public Health with an Online MPH Degree

The MPH and career advancement

As the healthcare employment market becomes more and more competitive, it is becoming increasingly critical that candidates have the knowledge, skills and abilities required to fulfill job responsibilities. The field of public health is no exception. In fact, given the breadth of subject matter that public health can encompass, it is highly recommended that individuals who choose to work in this field obtain a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree. While a bachelor’s degree provides a very introductory approach to the concept of community health, the MPH degree dives deeper into the various levels of concentration, including health promotion, biostatistics, epidemiology, health education, environmental health and disaster preparedness. An online MPH degree will provide individuals with the education needed to advance in the public health field.

Positions in public health requiring the MPH degree

Most public health related positions within the public, government and non-profit sectors require an MPH degree. Some positions that are more specialized, for example, epidemiology, environmental health or disaster preparedness may require a doctoral degree.

As public health varies in scope, so can the types of positions available, including health educator, manager of education and training programs, community benefit program manager, health communications specialist and director of disaster response.

Most MPH programs require previous experience in public health. If you are looking to advance your career and move into higher-level positions, an MPH degree can help you gain the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve your goals.
